Lion sculpture

Istán Gerendai’s sculpture can be seen on the main square of Szigetvár: the Zrínyi square. It was built in 1878 by the contribution of Szigetvár and the region. This is the oldest Zrínyi monument. The lion on the red marble pedestal treads on the Turkish cresent moon flag. The symbol of the lion can also be found on the crest of Szigetvár, where two lions stand for the battle and the death of Zrínyi and the Sultan. On the pedestal, Mihály Vörösmarty’s epigram can be read.
